Do It Yourself Guide for Repairing Your Car’s Power Windows

Auto Repair | Posted by admin August 5th, 2010

Try imagining yourself driving down the freeway and you get to a tollbooth and reach down for the switch to lower your windows in order to pay for the toll. However, as you press the switch to get your window down, nothing happens. Even the gentle whirring sound of the power window motor isn’t present. So, what you do is stop the car, open your door and pay the toll.

After that, you think about the expensive car repair bill which will put you in a bad mood. All your plans to go on a relaxing weekend vacation are gone.

However, before you think about getting your car’s power window repaired, you have to consider the fact that you can repair it yourself. By knowing how to repair the power window, you will be able to save thousands of dollars on repairs and parts.

Before you consider replacing the window regulator, you need to consider the fact that dirty electrical contacts may be causing the problem. Oftentimes, power window failure is attributed to dirty electrical contacts where electricity can’t pass through the switch because of dirt or other foreign objects.

You can clean this up yourself. On most cars, the main power for all switches goes through the master switch which is located on the driver’s console. There are cases where the switch is dirty which causes the window to malfunction. If you see that the switch is dirty, all you need to do is take all the necessary steps to clean the contact. You will be surprised to find that this simple problem will cost you hundreds of dollars on repairs.

If the car’s power windows are still malfunctioning even if the switches and electrical contacts are clean, then the problem may lie on the window regulator. Whatever the car’s model is, replacing the window regulator is similar.

All you need to do is remove the door panel for the affected window. Next, you need to locate and remove the bolts that are holding the regulator to the door. You may need to manually lower the window in order for you to access the bolts.

Next, remove the old window regulator and disconnect all the wirings that are connected to the old window regulator. After this is done, put in the new window regulator. Make sure that you connect the wires correctly. After installing the new window regulator, tighten the bolts and also reinstall a moisture barrier.

After that, you can replace the door panel again and test your car’s power window.

As you can see, it is quite easy to fix a faulty power window. By following these few simple steps, you will be able to repair your car’s defective or malfunctioning power window and save a lot of money in the process.

Auto Navigation System Provides Less Stress Travel

Auto Navigation System | Posted by admin July 9th, 2010

Have you ever found yourself frustrated with slow moving traffic only to reach a certain point (an hour or so later) to find that the problem seems to suddenly fix itself? Have you ever been sent on a poorly marked detour during road construction only to find an hour or two later that you are hopelessly lost and have no clue where to go from there? Do you travel often and find that road signs are often obstructed or missing all together? Have you ever found yourself late to important meetings as the result of bad traffic, bad weather, or poor directions? If you have answered yes to any of these questions you are a prime candidate for purchasing an auto navigation system for your car, truck, or SUV.

You may think that only people who travel extensively need these incredibly useful devices and systems. The truth of the matter is that anyone who spends any time during the average day in a car could seriously benefit by owning an automobile navigation system or device of some sort. The problem often lies in deciding which of these systems would be best suited for your specific personal navigation needs.

Stand-alone Navigation Systems

These types of systems offer the most complete and thorough mapping utilities. You will often find extended or subscription features with these systems that offer vital information about daily weather, traffic, and construction issues in the areas in which you are traveling even going as far as offering alternate routes in order to avoid possible delays along your route. You can purchase systems that either have maps already loaded or that require you to go online in order to download the maps the system will use. These systems are usually great at not only offering detailed driving directions but also information about landmarks you should see along the way. They are the best buy for those that will rely heavily upon them for directions and travel details.

Multipurpose Handheld Navigation Devices

These auto navigation systems are by far the best for busy active families. These devices don’t offer the same turn by turn directions as the stand-alone navigation systems but software can be purchased that will enable them to do so. The primary benefit of these devices is that they can be useful both in and out of the automobile. They are excellent choices for those who spend a great deal of time outdoors. If you get your thrills hiking, biking, horseback riding, mountain climbing, or row boating down the way you will find that these devices offer a great number of options to the average consumer and are an excellent choice for those who want more from their navigation dime than a system that can only be used inside an automobile.

Laptop/Palm Based Systems

Technology improves continuously and often by leaps and bounds. It should come as no surprise that our laptops and Palm Pilots could quite easily be turned into personal navigation devices complete with turn-by-turn directions and many other bells and whistles along the way. Some of the devices that make this happen cost less than $100 which makes this an excellent choice for those who travel extensively with Palms and laptops in tow.  In fact, if you already own the Palm or laptop it seems almost a waste of money to invest in more extensive auto navigation systems when you can have all you really need for a minimal investment. Of course, there are those that can be quite costly and the ultimate decision is yours alone. I happen to be the bargain hunter type (which often translates to cheap).

Regardless of which type of auto navigation system you ultimately select I believe you will find that having this type of assistance in your travel offers a certain level of safety and security that you may not have enjoyed previously. Take care and enjoy your travels, I hope you find that things go much more smoothly and confidently with the assistance of your auto navigation system.

Auto Service Contracts 101: The Need-to-Know Facts

Buy a Car | Posted by admin June 9th, 2010

Today, buying car is not just simply buying a car. This is because when a person wants to buy a car, there are many additional services that tag along. One great example of these so-called “extras” is the auto service contract.

These auto service contracts are not necessarily required by most car dealers. However, most car buyers are enticed to get one in order to protect themselves against unforeseen circumstances such as expensive car repairs.

Generally, auto service contracts are pledges made by the agency, usually the car dealer, responsible to provide the necessary services or repairs that the buyer or the contract holder is entitled for.

The problem with some people is that they categorize auto service contract as the same with extended car warranties. What they do not know is that car warranties are normally included in the price of the new car bought while auto service contracts can be obtained any time even if the person did not buy a new car. Moreover, auto service contracts are always an additional cost for the car buyer meaning he may or may not obtain an auto service contract.

However, just like the other financial decisions, careful deliberation is extremely important before making some final decisions. This is because not all auto service contracts are made equal.

Here is a list of the factors that need to be considered when getting an auto service contract:

1.  Buyers should be aware of the terms and conditions stipulated in the auto service contract.

In every agency or company that provides auto service contracts, each has its own terms and conditions. Hence, it is important for every buyer to know first the terms as stipulated in the contract so as to know what kinds of details are included and what are those that are not included.

2. Buyers should know the specific entity who will perform the required services.

In this way, the buyer would know what goes on when a certain service is required. In this way, the contract holder would know where to ask for the repairs and to whom they should ask for the needed services.

3. Know the reputation of those who will provide auto service contracts.

It is extremely important to know how long the company or the dealer has been in the business. Along with it comes the reputation that has been built for so many years of reliable services and performances that the customers were able to testify.

The important thing here is that people should be aware of what they are paying for. After all, it’s their money that is at risk.
